This age-old question inspired the "Kurnaths with Cameras" Challenge (aka the KCC). In reality, Joe does not have everything. Not even close. No, Joe probably could have used an actual present for his birthday. However, his oldest daughter decided that she would give him a gift that would keep on giving for an entire year - a little bit of competition.
Lindsey, having been raised on 27 and 1/2 years of a winner-takes-all mentality attributable only to her father, decided that a little challenge might make them better people. Well, at least make them better photographers.
Neither player has had formal training - we're dealing strictly with amateurs here. Despite their lack of training, both competitors do love seeing a great image fill up their canvas (or computer monitor). Plus, they both are slightly obsessed with being pretty darn good at everything they try. With that, we arrive at the KCC.
Name: The Kurnaths with Cameras Challenge (hereafter known as the KCC)
Objective: Fun. And maybe, just maybe, trying to be a little bit better than the other.
Length: March 30, 2010 to March 30, 2011 (Joe's Advanced Birthday #1 to Joe's Advanced Birthday #2)
Prize: Joe will pick his favorite picture out of the year, from either competitor, to be blown up for framing. Lindsey will pay for said photo, as she officially acknowledges that she did not spend a dime on her father for Advanced Birthday #1. The photographer of said picture will win bragging rights at family gatherings including but not limited to birthdays, vacations, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
The Rules:
- The only photographers are Joe and Lindsey.
- Photos can be taken with any camera (e.g. DSLR, point and shoot, iPhone) as long as they up on the blog in digital format.
- A picture will be posted on the blog by Sunday of each week, with the first picture going up by 4/4/2010.
- The players are encouraged to include text explaining the photo or asking for advice or comments.
- Weekly Challenges (WC): One player can dish out a WC to the other for a specific week. A WC can be based on a word, an activity, a feeling, an event, etc. Each player must produce a photo that, to him/her, represents that WC. The catch is that the right to issue a WC must alternate, starting with Joe. Once Joe issues the first, Lindsey will have WC rights, after which they go back to Joe, much like a possession arrow in a basketball game.
- Have fun. Play fair. Take pictures. Be inspired. Rock on.
Happy Birthday Dad!
